TITUSVILLE, FLA. (August 7, 2025)—As two-time cancer survivor, Wanda Knight pulled the cord on a ceremonial bell, the resulting sound symbolized letting freedom—from cancer—ring.
Ms. Knight, of Titusville, is the first cancer patient to complete treatment at the Parrish Healthcare Oncology Center, the new home of Parrish’s nationally recognized cancer treatment program, accredited since 1990 by the American College of Surgeons’ Commission on Cancer (CoC), and Brevard County’s only CoC-accredited cancer treatment program.
The Parrish Healthcare Center in North Titusville, where the oncology center is located, is about a mile south on U.S. 1 from Parrish Medical Center. Ms. Knight spoke at the new center’s July 22 ribbon cutting, focusing her attention on the importance of how the center’s staff combines medicine with human caring.
“Cancer changes everything,” said Ms. Knight in her remarks. “It challenges your body, your mind, and your spirit. But it also reveals how resilient we are—and how powerful support can be. This new space represents healing, not just through medicine, but through kindness and human connection. This place isn’t just a healthcare center, it’s a symbol of courage, compassion, and possibility for those battling cancer.”
On July 29 Ms. Knight achieved her personal treatment milestone—overcoming breast cancer for the second time. She rang the center’s ceremonial bell, an act that traditionally marks the conclusion of successful cancer treatment.
Dr. Marinely Cruz-Amy, a hematologist oncologist at the oncology center, said Ms. Knight is an inspiration for several reasons. “Seeing Wanda ring the bell, as the first patient to complete treatment at this new location, is a moment we will forever cherish.” said Dr. Cruz-Amy. “We celebrated a new beginning alongside Wanda, and it reaffirms our mission is to walk with our patients through every step of their cancer journey.”
“Our philosophy—our mission—is healing experiences for everyone all the time,” Dr. Cruz-Amy added. “And that goes both ways. We’re grateful for the opportunity to serve Wanda and see her again cancer-free. That’s a healing experience for her, and for us, as she exemplifies why we do this work.”
