As summer temperatures remain at an all-time high and outdoor activities increase, Parrish Healthcare’s Wound Healing and Hyperbaric Medicine Center urges the community to take precautions to protect their feet from injuries that can lead to other serious health complications.
“Foot injuries and infections can happen easily during the summer, especially for people with chronic conditions such as diabetes,” says Kelly Lusk, Program Director for Parrish Healthcare’s Wound Healing and Hyperbaric Medicine Center. “These ten simple tips can help prevent wounds and keep your feet healthy all summer long.”
- Don’t Walk Barefoot Outdoors: Sand, rocks and unknown debris can cause cuts, burns and/or blisters, increasing the risk of infection.
- Always Wear Properly Fitted Shoes: Ill-fitting shoes may cause friction and blisters. Talk to your primary care provider or a podiatrist if you believe you may require custom foot inserts, also known as orthotics.
- Check Your Sandals: Inspect your sandals for trapped rocks or debris after walking in sand or dirt.
- Stay Hydrated: Hydration helps prevent skin breakdown and supports wound healing.
- Monitor Blood Glucose: For individuals with diabetes, managing blood sugar levels during summer’s hottest months is essential for preventing wounds and ensuring proper healing.
- Dry Your Feet: Increased water exposure can lead to skin tears. Take breaks to dry your feet when swimming or spending time in water.
- Use Antibiotic Cream: Treat any existing wounds with sterile bandages and antibiotic ointment, such as Neosporin or Polysporin, available over-the-counter at most pharmacies and retailers. Additionally, follow physician advice for any necessary dressing changes.
- Limit Heat Exposure: Avoid being outside during peak heat if you have an open wound. Excessive heat can delay healing.
- Put Your Feet Up: Elevate your feet for at least 15 minutes, several times a day, to reduce swelling—especially after activity.
- Compress the Heat: Use compression wraps or socks to promote circulation and reduce inflammation.
Parrish Healthcare encourages everyone, especially those with existing foot wounds or chronic health conditions, to be proactive and attentive to foot care during the summer. Should any concerns arise, Parrish Healthcare’s Wound Healing and Hyperbaric Medicine Center is available to assist with treatment and healing solutions.
