Discharge from the hospital is a big day, and one we at Parrish Medical
Center want to make sure every patient is prepared for. Although your
acute care has concluded, this does not mean you will be back to full
strength upon your discharge. Patients are released from the hospital
once it is believed they can safely continue their recovery in the comfort
of their own homes. For this reason, there are some things you should
keep in mind as you get ready for your return home.
Transportation -- Even after your discharge, it may not be safe for you to operate a vehicle
for the next few days. If you came to the hospital for surgery and received
an anesthetic, you should not drive for at least 24 hours. Make arrangements
with friends or family to ensure you have a safe ride home from the hospital.
Food – Your doctor may have recommended a special diet for your while you continue
recovery at home. It is important to have your home stocked up with your
new dietary needs until you can resume your normal habits.
Help around the home – We strongly recommend having a friend or loved one stay with you for at
least 24 hours after your discharge. While this is rare, it is possible
that you could suffer an unexpected complication after your discharge
and someone will need to be there to assist you. Additionally, having
someone available to help with chores and errands allows you a chance
to rest and recover more efficiently.
Continuing your recovery – For serious injuries and illnesses, your need for medical care might continue
as an outpatient after your discharge. Speak with your doctor about your
post discharge care needs and whether or not physical therapy, pain management,
or other recovery programs will be necessary. Outpatient recovery may
be done at a hospital, clinic, or your own home, if necessary.
